Here’s to long weekends and whatever relaxation, adventure, indulgence or — like myself — government-mandated house-bound quarantine you’re partaking in. #EidMubarak

For my first trip abroad since the pandemic, I had to return to Sri Lanka. I’m hesitant to travel somewhere I’ve never been in these times, in case I arrive and the situation changes and things end up more restricted and I can’t explore — which is exactly what happened on this trip. I researched and booked my hotel — @kahandakanda — with that possibility in mind, however, and I couldn’t be happier spending a week on this little tea estate just above Lake Koggala. There’s wildlife aplenty, gorgeous greenery, it’s thoughtfully designed and the cuisine is phenomenal.

[SOUND ON!] It’s the Holy Month of Ramadan and one of my favorite traditions is the iftar cannon. Every evening cannons go off across the city to announce the sunset maghrib prayer, which is what you hear calling out immediately after the cannon fires, and that it’s time to break the day’s fast. This cannon, at the historical Qasr Al Hosn site, is just a stone’s throw from my flat and very loud — so loud, in fact, that just this evening I discovered I could even hear it while taking a shower with all my windows closed. If I forget about it and am not waiting for the ka-boom, it tends to give me a little jump!

I haven’t posted on my blog since I moved to Abu Dhabi and the whole reason is simply because I’ve been perfecting the perfect snack stroll to share. Yep that’s exactly why. Head to www.travelaurel.com (link in bio) to follow my neighborhood food trail.
