Hello 2020 and my first travels of the new year and decade: Antakya, Turkey. I’m just about to board my flight back to Dubai, but check out my stories for highlights. While I was there to get an exclusive on the new @themuseumhotelantakya (a five-star hotel built around a fascinating Roman archaeological site that includes the world’s largest mosaic), I was truly amazed by the region in general, which, as the ancient biblical Antioch, brimmed with not only brilliant archaeological and religious sites, but great museums, fantastic food (Hatay is a UNESCO Gastronomic City), unbelievably genuine hospitality from the people, lovely local handicrafts, gorgeous villages and natural sites a short drive from the main city. One thing I am often asked is if Dubai, an Islamic city, is allowed to or chooses to participate in anything Christmassy when that time of year rolls around. And the answer is it absolutely does - in spades. Festive markets, winter fairs, holiday parties aplenty, and - as seen here - hotels brimming with festive decor and tree-lighting celebrations.
